Food Science and Technology

Food science is the study of the biological, physical, and chemical makeup of food and it’s processing. Food technology is the application of that scientific knowledge to develop, process, package, and distribute safe and nutritious food products.

Why is it important?

Food science and technology are crucial for providing safe, nutritious, and accessible food to a growing global population by ensuring food security, preventing contamination, reducing waste, and improving food quality and availability. Advancements in this multidisciplinary field enable the processing, preservation, and distribution of diverse food products, from fortified staples to convenient meals, enhancing public health and quality of life.

The food sector provides enough ingredients, meals, snacks, and drinks to power population every single day. It is the largest manufacturing sector in UK, employing around ½ million people and contributes over £38 billion to the UK economy. It is an exciting, fast-paced and rewarding place to work. There are lots of jobs available, lots of travel opportunities and lots of opportunity for career progression. The food sector is becoming more and more technology driven, with a large focus and health and sustainability, really exciting time to be part of it.
